Jaleel initially came to the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) through our Youth Futures Initiative program, which provides intensive case management and supportive services to youth involved in the juvenile justice system.
Recognizing his desire, and need for, job readiness training, Jaleel’s youth advocate then referred him to the Trafigura Work & Learn (W&L) Center’s bicycle repair class, which he has been enrolled in since April of 2014. Jaleel, who is also enrolled in our adult education program, New Orleans Providing Literacy to All Youth (NOPLAY), says that he loves the W&L Center because "I get to learn new skills that I know will help me in the future."
Because of his enthusiasm and clear desire to learn more skills, he was recently hired by YEP as a 2014 Summer Camp counselor. Jaleel, who is also continuing to work towards his High School Equivalency diploma, is appreciative of the W&L Center and the variety of supportive services YEP provides him, saying "YEP has helped me out a lot-I’m definitely in a better place than I was before I came here."
