YEP's Civil Rights Trip to Memphis

YEP had a fabulous trip to Memphis!!! Thank you for all your support and words of encouragement. We ended up bringing a total of 14 youth and 6 staff. It was a very moving and special experience for all of us and I definitely hope it was a trip the youth will remember forever.

We made it in time to attend the 40th Commemorative March on the afternoon of Friday, April 4th and we then participated in the candlelight vigil outside of the National Civil Rights Museum/Lorraine Motel. We marched 18 blocks with thousands of others from Memphis City Hall to the Civil Rights Museum and then heard a number of speeches from two of Dr. King’s children, among others. We participated in a moment of silence and at 6:01pm and witnessed a white dove being released from its cage … truly a memorable experience. Later on Friday we ate at Houston ’s and then we had great Memphis BBQ the second night. We toured the civil rights museum Saturday and then let the kids have some fun when we walked down Beale Street and went bowling and played arcade games at Jillian’s in DT Memphis.

The youth all had a great time and the staff too (although we are all exhausted)!!! I am attaching some pictures for you to look at … as they are a lot of fun.

We are planning to do another out-of-state trip in the next 6 months as this one was such a huge success. I will keep you posted!
